What is an Amami Islands Area Licensed Guide Interpreter? : 

A Local Licensed Guide Interpreter is an “individual who accompanies foreigners and provides them with travel guide services using a foreign language for remuneration” in designated areas.
A Local Licensed Guide Interpreter is an individual, who receives training conducted by each municipality and registered as a “Local Licensed Guide Interpreter,” and they have a good knowledge of the history, geography, and culture in their designated regions.

Training to become an Amami Islands Area Licensed Guide Interpreter has been conducted by the Wide Area Administration Association of Amami Islands under the cooperation of the 12 municipalities of the Amami Islands since the fiscal year of 2016.
47 people passed the English training course in the fiscal year of 2016. 31 people passed the English course and 26 people passed the Chinese course in the fiscal year of 2017.3 people passed the English course in the fiscal year of 2018. 20people passed the English course and 2people passed the Chinese course in the fiscal year of 2019. 22people passed the English course and 5people passed the Chinese course 3people passed the Korean course in the fiscal year of 2021. 20people passed the English course and 4people passed the Chinese course 2people passed the Korean course in the fiscal year of 2022.

The ones who pass the examination can register themselves in each municipality to become an Amami Islands Area Licensed Guide Interpreter.

Due to the revision of “Guide-Interpreter Business Law” enforced January 4, 2018, “Amami-Islands Special Guide Interpreter” has been changed to “Amami Islands Area Licensed Guide Interpreter.”
Individuals who are already certified as “Amami-Island Special Guide Interpreter” will be considered as Amami Islands Area Licensed Guide Interpreter. Thus, additional procedures to re-obtain certification are not required.
